Nude in the wilderness: why and how to do it

The idea for the site first occurred to me while swimming among icebergs in a glacial lake (the pic is on the New Zealand page). Of all the daft places anyone has ever practised naturism, I thought, this had to be about the daftest. But the remoteness and isolation make the naturist experience more intense: you really do feel vulnerable to the elements, utterly exposed to the natural world.

I would love to hear from other naturists, particularly those who enjoy naturism in some of the more remote places. All emails are welcome to nick@nmayhew.demon.co.uk. I'm only publicising this site through a few naturist websites - this is a small part of what naturism has to offer, and not the most accessible way to get into it!

I've been a naturist since I can first remember, and went to my first naturist beach at 18. With a naturist girlfriend I travelled to many of the best naturist resorts in Europe and have developed a huge amount of respect for other naturists as a result. But these places are not so suitable for holidays on your own and totally unsuitable with a non-naturist girlfriend. As this site shows, though, there are plenty of alternative holiday choices for a naturist with a desire to see the world.

Protecting wild places

There is more to running around without clothes than simply getting a tan. Naturists often say it puts them in closer rapport with the natural world, being as naked as the rest of nature. The more natural the environment, the more I find this to be true. And it also reminds me that I'm not the only living entity there that is vulnerable and fragile.

Many of the beautiful wildernesses on this site and elsewhere are being threatened: Lake Baikal and the coral reefs of the South Pacific are both delicate ecosystems and all the more precious for that. A rise in the sea temperature of just 1C is enough to turn a healthy, kaleidoscopic coral reef into a dead, white skeleton. Lake Baikal already has one factory using and polluting its water, although thankfully there is widespread recognition of the need to curb further harmful exploitation of the lake.

And it's not just the wildernesses themselves that matter. There are still to this day tribes around the world that haven't adopted clothing - they've probably been naked for every generation stretching back through our entire evolution. It touches me just enough as a naturist to care very much about the rights of tribal people to live unmolested by the rest of us. Whether they're the naked hunters of the Amazon basin or the well wrapped nomads of the Siberian Arctic, there is no need to foist Western clothing and other practices on any of them. I support Survival International's efforts to defend the rights of tribal people around the world. Clothing is hardly on their radar, I expect, but then naturism to me is far more than what you wear or don't wear.
