Nude beach desert

Another pacific paradise

Fiji is yet another beautiful archipelago in the South Seas that was once all naked, and which is now off-limits to official naturism. I've even read it's actually illegal to swim or sunbathe nude there, so be warned: the setting for that carefree classic Blue Lagoon, which has plenty of natural nudity, is more or less textile.

As always there are ways and means for the resourceful bare bather. One private holiday island, said to be rather expensive, advertises a nude beach. If you can afford it, Turtle island does sound the only place in the archipelago where naturists can book with any enthusiasm: http://www.turtlefiji.com/romance/beaches.php if you want to see more.

Anyway, I did go to Fiji and I did bare all, although this was strictly freelance fun.

We stayed on the tourist island of Malololailai, and if you're after nude bathing please don't book here! I slipped my shorts off the moment I got in the sea, but apart from that my efforts to find a place for some peaceful sunbathing came to nothing.

A promising finger of headland near the resort seemed the best place to try because I could see people coming along the land. Minutes after stripping off, a boat lurched into view round the corner, a honeymoon couple strolled into sight along the beach from the resort and a local fisherman appeared to be teleported on to the rocks from thin air a few yards away from us. I got dressed.

We managed to have a skinny dip before the world turned up, and we took some pictures to record the event, but next time I'll either pick another Pacific island or save up for Turtle island.

The only locals with a sensible view of swimwear. Don't miss a dolphin trip if you're in Fiji

I claimed this island for naturists everywhere... and then gave it straight back again when a boat sailed into view. Pity, it's a real natural paradise
